SHEEP BLOOD AGAR PLATE | Ready-To-Use Culture Media

Sheep Blood Agar medium is a versatile culture medium that combines both differential and enrichment features. It is primarily employed for the isolation, cultivation, and assessment of hemolytic activity in fastidious microorganisms, particularly Streptococci and Pneumococci.
This specialized Blood Agar plate medium is formulated with a highly nutritious extract and a 5% blood supplement. This combination serves to enhance the medium's effectiveness in the isolation, cultivation, and evaluation of hemolytic reactions in fastidious pathogenic microorganisms. It's important to note that the specific hemolytic patterns observed may vary depending on the source of animal blood or the type of base medium used. In the case of sheep blood, the presence of nucleotidase can hinder the growth of Haemophilus species on sheep blood agar, unless other microorganisms like Staphylococci provide the necessary V factors. Additionally, small quantities of reducing sugars can inhibit the expression of β-hemolysis, potentially leading to the development of a green zone or ring of hemolysis in β-hemolytic Streptococci.
