Every nutrition label seems to celebrate it. Protein is everywhere, but what does it actually mean to eat a high-protein diet, and why should you care?
The Building Block Behind the Buzz
Protein is one of the three macronutrients that your body depends on to survive. But protein is uniquely structural. It builds and repairs muscle tissue, manufactures enzymes and hormones, supports immune function, and even ferries oxygen through your bloodstream via hemoglobin. In short: without adequate protein, your body slowly cannibalizes itself.
A high-protein diet deliberately increases protein intake beyond the standard recommended level. While general dietary guidelines suggest 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, a high-protein approach typically pushes this to 1.6 to2.2 grams per kilogram. This is sometimes higher for competitive athletes.
